I am really upset. My boss laid me off on April 2nd and canelled my health insurance(I did not know that until today) and yet when they sent me my last paycheck, they took out money for the insurance. Are they rats or what? Can they cancel my insurance that fast? I thought it good for thirty days after. What about cobra? I had HMO so maybe I don't get it. I googled and I have found nothing except, maybe that is the policy your HR department had with the insurance company. Has anyone else had this happen? I have a phone call into the HR department to find out why. But thought maybe someone out there has had this happen to them and can advise me what to say to HR.

Act like an attorney and send them a demand letter for your money back!!! Would you rather have another month of insurance or your money back? They've got to give you one or the other. Even if you call an attorney they'll give you advice to see if they'd want to take your case.
They surely can't make you pay for something that you didn't receive. It hasn't happened to me like that but I recall reading that they have to carry you on insurance for 30 days.
I'm so sorry Bonnie. Gosh, that totally sucks!!!

Thanks Carrie, yep your right, it sucks. I found out today when I went to call the insurance company to be sure I had all my ducks in a row regarding the HMO. I have a doctors appointment on Wednesday and he charges four hundred dollars. I did not get to see him at all for five month cause I was working like an animal for these insensitive turkey's. I know they paid me for two days of personal time and one week for regular time and took the money out of that. GEEZE! They must be desperate. I don't know what to tell the doctor. I need my scripts renewed so I have to go to him. Otherwise, I could care less about the doctor. He has helped me a lot, but hey a horse doctor could do as much for me as he does. No big deal. So upset. So angry inside.
I think you are right, I am supposed to have thirty days. After all the money they took covers a thirty days. I think they are wrong. Makes me want to call Obama or O Riley.
Thanks Carrie, that gives me more confidence for tomorrows phone call.

Thanks Friskers I think if they are going to take my money for payment then they better give me insurance.
I have never been laid off before, course I have never lived through this type of economy either. I should have never tried to work in corporate america anyway cause I have absolutely not respect for it. They all have their mission statements but behind it all they are vipers and snakes. No wonder our Nation is in the trouble it is in. So many higher ups have no guts and so morals and no heart and they just don't care. They talk out both sides of their mouth. One side is love, peace, harmony, and care. The other side, jealousy, greed, envy and hate. Oh yeah, Corporate America is goin down. I have been a realtor for about ten years now and I am going back to it. I love the independance. Living with my church friend I will be able to ride the economy tide and not suffer too much. Get rid of the mortgage and the taxes will be sooooooooooooo nice. Yep. On the market in a few weeks. Then I can comfortably go to the doctor. Yep. Yep. Yep. Lookin forward to being freeeeeeeeeeeeeee again.

ChicagoBonnie,
That is just awful. It seems they can just cut off health insurance instantly, but Cobra really should be an option for you...I'd sure think. I really don't know what the legal aspect of this is, and what Carrie brought up too I'd sure not thought about (that the insurance money you'd paid) IF they cut you off instantly, and you still have remaining paid for days or weeks left (that you'd paid for) it DOES seem like "what happens to that money"? I'd sure bring that up.

Dear CB,
How awful!!! How insensitive are these beestards??? They have to offer some type of medical coverage i.e. COBRA, even though it is so expensive....you have coverage with your regular insurance for the time that you've paid in, and then COBRA will contact you with their numbers. Hold on to your hat! Those numbers aren't even close to being realistic!!!
Here's another little tidbit that the insurance companies don't tell you: They can BACKDATE the removal of coverage for up to 2 months!!! I found this out 'cause when I converted from my regular health insurance to a Medicare supplemental insurance (with the same company), my husband was still listed on the policy. I spoke with the original company to find out if my husband was still covered (I signed a statement stating that on March 9, 2009 my original coverage would end) and the new Medicare coverage would begin on the first of March. So, therefore, I was supposedly covered by BOTH policies, right? WRONG!!! Even though the insurance company said that my husband and I were both covered for all expenses, including his open heart surgery, they had the RIGHT to BACKDATE the termination of coverage for up to 2 months!!! Now, how can this be when you pay for the coverage, premiums are automatically deducted from your LTD payments, and more than one rep from the companies (BOTH) tell you that he is covered???
The visiting nurse who came to check on my husband was the one who uncovered this! We had a conference call right away between the nurses' organization, the insurance companies, and me. Both insurance company affiliates agreed that he WAS covered for the heart surgery....BUT THEN, one of them said, "well, ya know, we can backdate the date of coverage..." What the hell is that supposed to mean???
I am writing a letter to our Attorney General Blumenthal to look into this obvious fraudulent tactic. I worked for the top execs of two major insurance companies (we are the insurance capital of the world...), and know what goes on inside, if they can get away with it!
Call your State Attorney General's Office and report the fraud, file a complaint against the insurance company, your former company, for not giving adequate notice of termination of your health insurance...and without offering COBRA - that is a MUST!!! Even if you can't afford COBRA, every employer that covers their employees with insurance, or even offers insurance, must abide by the COBRA laws.
THEN, call your State Insurance Department and start a claim there as well. It appears to me that this entire process as you said above, is illegal - IMO. I'm not a lawyer, but I know what goes on in these companies!!! GREED, MONEY, MONEY, GREED!
Stir the pot Chicago Bonnie - many companies will try these tactics as well with so many folks being laid off. The insurance companies are stuffing their pockets with all the loose change they are taking from those who can least afford it! SOCK IT TO 'EM!
Good luck, but don't let it drop! I'm so very sorry that you have to go through this agony along with everything else we face. I would also put this on Obama's Whitehouse Blog!!!
Love,
ctbarb

This is just wonderful for you. I also remember you said you go (or used to go) to Dr. Matthews. Please be careful, dear Bonnie.

I am sorry this has happened to you Bonnie,
I have been there well really I am there now and I am looking forward to cashing in on some really bomb patents.
I read once Things like this are seen as problems or seen as challenges.
Problems are depressing while challenges can be exciting.
Will you get unemployment?
I have heard there are a lot of grants for displaced workers at least here in Michigan.
Maybe this will come to the best!!

Toni, Kmarie, CtBarb, Violet, Littlsissy, thanks so much for the info. I am receiving unemployment and that aint much. But I am blessed to have it. I was not offered any alternative insurance. Which is par for the course because the HR woman was a real lazy bum. She used to sit at her desk and eat, read magazines, cut out coupons and just plain do nothing. She was a do nothing. And she has been there eight years. The GM was the only one who did any work that and the sales people like myself. The others did the same as the HR woman. I don't know how they could get away with it. They all used to yell and scream and fight, even the HR and the GM. It was apocolispse. I am glad I am out of there. I was so miserable and exhauseted from work. They even made us sales people spend our lunch with our clients and have meetings. We had no rest from the nuttiness. I have call into the HR but as true to life as to be exspected, she has not yet called me back. I feel like writing a letter to the owner and the VP and let them know how those people really are. But then I may need a reference. They gave me a great reference in writing. Nice. As far as insurance, I have got to speak to the HR department first and find out what she has to say for herself. Reading my policy would do too. Thanks all for the recommnendations. I will follow up after the call to HR. I would love to write and few letters(not so good at the spelling)to the Attorney General. This week in the making. I will watch those do nothings sqirm.

Dear CB, I'm sorry that you're having to go through this. It sounds like you have a good plan going forward though. I ran a small business for several years and was able to get small group health insurance. Kaiser for example with sell small group health insurance if your business has at least two members signing up (the 2nd member could be a friend or whoever). I'm sure other health insurance companies will do the same. The great thing about the small group medical insurance is that they have to accept all members from your company (the small group) and pre-existing conditions are not considered. Also the small group rates tend to be much less expensive then individual policy rates. All the best to you as you follow your plan moving forward. Merc

Hey thanks Merc that is a good idea. I wonder if I can contact the NAR(national association of realtors) and see if they can help me out. Thanks so much. TOGETHER WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL. \
On the phone now, thanks.

Ok just got off the phone with Blue Cross Blue Shield, they said that it is up to the employees weather or not I am offered COBRA. BCBC said there is nothing they can do that if they were going to offer it, they should have sent the paperwork to me.

Thank you everyone. I have had a wisper in my ear from God for a few years now to sell but most everyone said, no stay and hold on to your place. Problem is all my joy is gone. I have been so consumed with working and paying all the bills that I never had time for anyone or anthing else these last six years. With this illness taking all my energy the first three year then some healing and able to work more, I have lived a life, if you can call it that of empyness. I have made great money when the real estate money was up and still I was empty inside. I knew then I needed more in my life. But I just kept working and paying bills. THEN I TOOK THIS AWFUL JOB WITH CORPORATE America and absolutely hated working with all those crazy lazy good for nothing people. Hated it. I loved all the old people that lived there but hated the managements attitude. Was awful. They should not have been paid. There last zap to me was to take my insurance away. Ok. well whatever. I started tearing up my carpet today and applied for credit for new and Menards gave it to me. Ordering the cheapest and found a person to install cheap and I am out of here as soon as I can sell it. I will sell it, I know it. Take my equity and get out of dodge. I will never again work this hard. I am finished. Life is too short and we need to have time for God, family and friends. I am trusting God to lead me and give me my joy back. I can tell already things are changing for the better.
I LOVE ALL OF YOU AND I WANT TO THANK YOU A THOUSAND TIMES OVER FOR BEING THERE FOR me and the rest of us. YOU are the best group anywhere. Love you all.
