Hi Banny,
I'm just now reading your thread and looking at where you live and it looks like you're fairly safe where you are, there's no large amount of trees immediately around you, like you're in a fire ring. I know you don't like where you live but looks like an oasis from a fire, but those skies - it looks the end of time there, I don't know about the smoke nor air quality?... I know it must be scary?
I'm praying for you and those poor people around you that are losing their homes and in constant fear.
What is happening that there are so many fires in California? I know some are from lightening - are they being deliberately set? They should hang them at high noon if they are!
I hope all your loved ones are safe, with their homes and ok? Try not to worry too much, you've got your extended family here and we're all praying for you and California's well-being.
Love you!

Thanks so much guys... made it thru yesterday and the fire behind me was taken care of. Your prayers are working! The biggest one is 30 miles from me now (or it was last night when I went to bed.) I haven't heard any news yet today. They break in from time to time tho to let us know what's happening. The problem is the wind is starting to pick up today and the terrain is so hard to get into they can only fight the big one by air pretty much. It was spreading 2 miles each hour last night, so that's not good at all.... it brought it very close to my sis's house in Santa Clarita. She's closer to the fires than we are now. My girlfriend was evacuated last night from her house in Sunland/Tujunga... when I talked to her last on the phone she said she could see high flames from her window. I called her this AM but just got her voice mail again... hope she's ok. Smoke is starting to spread again now... the wind blew alot of it out over night, and of course when the fire behind me was taken care of it helped clear the air too. But there's so many and the one is so huge that it's starting to fill the air again. Homes have been lost tho and 2000 are threatened again today cuz it's coming down from the mountainsides now. We'll be ok up here... I'm pretty sure anyway. They can move so very fast tho. Before you know it it's in your backyard. That's what happened with the last fire we had here about 4 years ago. Had we not just plowed the hillsides and created a firebreak a week before, we'd definitely have burned down then... I'd just come back from talking to the firemen up the hill. Then I drove out back about 2 miles on the dirt roads to make sure the gate was open for the cattle to get out. I got back from there and couldn't see much of anything but smoke. I came in the house, went to the bathroom and when I came out and went into the kitchen all I could see were flames all around the house. That's how fast it can happen! So it's just a matter of praying and watching at this point ya know? Thanks for all your prayers too guys... they mean so much to me, just like you do! love ya's ~~ bannanny

This fire is really bad. It's DOUBLED in size overnight from 40,000 acres to 85,000 and 20 additional homes were lost. Two firemen were killed when their vehicle was taken over by flames and they went over the side of the road. Four residents were hurt with 3rd degree burns trying to flee their homes. It's so sad you guys. Animals are showing up in the cities below running from the flames too.
It's about to reach Mt. Wilson and closing in on the Antelope Valley (the valley below me) where Lancaster and Palmdale have become one of the evacuation sites for large and small animals, so let's really pray they can stop this thing. This is the first time the firefighters have been pesimistic about a fire. It's only 5% contained, which is nothing. There are 8 fires burning now... 2 more broke out yesterday. Fireplanes have been flying overhead all day today.
I mentioned Mt. Wilson... it's where the observatory is, along with all the tv, radio, and sherrifs dept. communication towers are. They expect it's gonna reach it sometime today. Winds are still picking up... it's starting to blow pretty good up here now. They just said on the news there are 10,000 more homes being threatened and 4 thousand have been under mandatory evacuation so far today.
Sometimes it seems like California's burning to the ground. I guess 2 more fires broke out in Northern California as well. Hope you're ok too massena... I heard one of them was near Sacramento.
Anyway... keep sayin those prayers guys. They're really appreciated.

It's good to know that you have such a good firebreak all around your home! I have a friend who has a home in Glendale, and it looked from the news like the fire is very near there--or already in that neighborhood? Do you know?

Yeah vi... it's reached Glendale. They were evacuating there 2 days ago. I think they've been able to keep it from goin down into the city directly tho. Just the homes on the hillsides below the forest were being evacuated. We have mountain ranges all around us tho and they're all burning. This has to be the worst fire we've seen in this area yet. Wish I had some more batteries for my camera... I'd take some more pictures. I went outside last night and all you could see was a bright orange glow across the mountains. It's pretty scary lookin to say the least. Hope your friend is ok... I still haven't heard from my girlfriend in Sunland/Tujunga. I hope she's ok too cuz 20 homes were lost there last night.

Monday at 5 PM, I'm listening to the firefighters news conference...105,296 acres from 85,000 just this morning. Flames up to 80 feet... 53 more homes destroyed with 12,000 more threatened.
They're calling it a vicious fire to say the least. Normally during the night hours, fires will settle down due to the rise in humidity and temperature drop. But not this fire... it exploded overnight yet again. There's 75 miles of fireline and so many areas are being threatened. It's creating it's own weather system now too and it's burning in 3 directions... northeast, west and east. They're trying to keep it out of all the foothill communities... but they're even evacuating areas in the city of Los Angeles now!! They have 4,000 firefighters fighting this mess.
The 2 firemen who were killed were trying to protect a firecamp that ended up being completely consumed and destroyed... they went over an embankment and fell 800 ft. to their deaths... they saved 70 others losing their own lives. It's so very very sad. Oh Lord... 1 of the 2 firemen who were killed was expecting his first child in 3 weeks. The other left a wife and 2 grown children. We sure need to pray for their families you guys.
There've been 2 communications sites destroyed so far and they're trying to get all the wild animals out of the Wildlife Way Station too... the one Tipi Hedren owns. They won't even have any containment for another 2 weeks.
So we've got this blaze going down towards Los Angeles on the west side of the fire, on the northeast side of the fire it's just 5 miles from my sis's house. It went thru Big Tujunga and Little Tujunga where my girlfriend lives. I still haven't heard back from her. They're moving fire resources into the Antelope Valley (just below me) on the east side as we speak cuz the fire is just 7 miles from there now... which makes it 20 miles from me. But that's just on the east end of the fire from where I am.... the northeast side of the fire is even closer to me now. I'm tellin you guys... it's like someone poured a big bowl of lava over the Angeles Crest Forest and it's flowing down in every direction there is to go.
We've had the DC 10 airplane dropping retardant already, but they've just gotten authorization and flown three 747's in from Canada... they drop 20,000 gallons of fire retardant at a time. That should help eh?
Ok... I just heard from my girlfriend... she's had her car packed to the brim, but actually avoided the evacuations until now. She's on her way out and will call me later.
Please continue praying for everyone here...
love you ~~ bannanny

Thanks guys... no it's not common Karen, but this thing isn't what you'd call a common fire either. It's a monster and nothing's stopping it... so hopefully these huge planes will have some effect on it. The only problem with the big planes is they can't get as low as the smaller fire planes can and they can't fly any slower than 160 MPH... so these guys have to be right on target. That's hard to do at such a high level and going that fast. The up side? They can drop 4x (or it might be 8x) the amount of fire retardant.
They just said on the news that NO DOUBT the fire is gonna reach Mt. Wilson... they had to evacuate all the firefighters from there this afternoon and say it's in fates hands now. The mountaintop holds cellular towers, network communications, police communication towers, etc. But the main worry isn't even those... it's the Griffith Observatory. If it burns, nothing will replace what it holds. The Hubble scope and scopes that money can't even buy anymore. So that would be a very horrific scenario if this fire consumes it. They did what they could do creating firebreaks, bulldozing, etc. but the fire's just too close for anyone to remain up there now.

Hi Banny, I'm starting to get worried about you, this has been going on for too long now, it's got to be terribly stressful, to say the least. I went out today to catch up on the California Wildfire news and since I hadn't been keeping up... I didn't realize what a serious situation it is out there. I wasn't aware that there hasn't been enough rain and everything is tinder box brittle, we all need to pray for some rain for you? And, the news said that the winds come up soon. I hope the Observatory and Communications Towers don't get destroyed. Everyone let's imagine that it's raining on Banny's house, yard, all the way over to LA... let us pray for a soaking rain for the West? We're praying Banny. Love you... Here's some news and an Interactive Fire Map - www.wildfiretoday.com/
