Hi itchin, That is a really good letter, I think. The links were very personable and interesting. I have never watched her show but know she can do lots of things just by giving something a forum. I have no TV since 1985 so don't really miss it except for star trek. Sorry for the loss of your kitties. We have seven street cats that need homes on my friends block in Los Angeles that used to be someones cat. Sad people dump their cats when they move on. A friend feeds them on the street as she can't have cats where she is. The neighbor yells and threatens her so she has to do it in the wee hours of the morning. 22122

Hi itchin, Barcodes on produce curezone.com/blogs/fm.asp?i=980568 (this is an old article). You can ask your grocer too. I think that the thinner the skin is, the more important it is to buy organic. But I still but organic bananas because they taste better and last longer. In the white light, ~j

Well I never... I have an apple with a bar code of 4139, meaning this is a naturally grown apple? I know it was because I bought the apples from an orchard 4 hours from home. According to the apple orchard owner he is forced to put a wax coating on the apples by the supermarkets. I don't know why the wax is needed (maybe for shine), my dad just told me that yesterday. Do GM foods have to be identified on food labels?www.foodstandards.gov.au/consumerinformation/gmfoods/Yes. It is mandatory for GM foods to be identified on food labels in Australia and New Zealand. These requirements became law in December 2001 and were put in place by food ministers to assist consumers to purchase or avoid GM foods, depending on their own views and beliefs. GM foods and ingredients (including food additives and processing aids from GM sources) must be identified on labels with the words ‘genetically modified’, if novel DNA and/or novel protein from an approved GM variety is present in the final food. GM foods must also be labelled if they have altered characteristics. For example, if a GM food has an increased level of a particular nutrient, such as a vitamin, or has to be cooked or prepared in a different way compared to the conventional food, then this also needs to be stated on the label. Some exemptions are allowed under the labelling requirements. For example, foods which do not contain novel DNA or protein do not have to be labelled, such as highly refined or processed foods such as vegetable oils or sugars. However, if these foods also have altered characteristics (e.g. a refined oil with an altered fatty acid profile) then the food must be labelled. Further details on GM food labelling, including a full explanation of the exemptions can be found here : tinyurl.com/6e6lnhd I don't believe them...

just remembered - the wax on the apples is a preservative. snakeskincowgirl - do you know if they do the barcode thing with food products, such as potato chips, cookies? That packet of spaghetti I mentioned being marked "No Genetic Modification" was made in Italy.

snakeskincowgirl - the bar code sticker theory, I'm not seeing that here - I looked at as many different/imported etc products as I could. I am not seeing labelling of GMO on any food products, soy is mentioned frequently on labelling, but not as stated in the link below; Labelling of genetically modified food www.foodstandards.gov.au/_srcfiles/Standard_1_5_2_GM_v120.pdf
