I have been lurking on a dog lyme list - and am learning more about lyme there.
This morning there was a good tip posted by one of the people on the list.
He recommended shampooing dogs with dilute dishwashing liquid such as Dawn or Ivory dishsoap. That it kills any ticks present.
He said if you drop a live tick into a jar of water in which a couple of drops of Ivory liquid was added, you could see the tick die. And, that ticks are usually pretty hard to kill.
Lather dog well - leave on for 15 minutes - rinse.
He said that when the bath is done, you can find "sand" at the bottom of the tub. Upon close examination, he has found that they are dead tick larvae. And, there is none left on the dog . . .
If you don't get 100% kill, repeat.
He said you can put a diluted solution in a sprayer attached to a garden hose and spray outside the home to help reduce tick population on the premises.

Hi QH!
Thank you for the info! Its good to know this because we do have lots of ticks around!
I'm going to go ahead and bathe my dog with it - Ticks or not!
The horses get ticks all the time, can this be used on them too? (Iwould think you could)
Last year one of my mare's had 3 ticks on her neck I wasn't going to touch them with a ten foot pole so I run into the house and call the vet to see how to go about getting them off her, vet said " just put fingernail polish on them and they will die and just fall off"
Hope all is well!
Take care, patti2

Hey, I use Dawn on me and my dog. I knew it killed fleas but didn't know about the ticks. I don't leave it on for 15 minutes though. I have seen it bring out the white grains in skin if put on full strength and run your fingernail over them. Maybe you have to catch them at a certain stage cause it doesn't always work.

Hi:
I'd think it would work on a horse too. After all, it's the dish detergent, not the animal that affects the tick.
Ten Foot Pole - that's how my doctor diagnosed me with scabies. It's one of the things I wonder about - on the long list of suspect sources. (Scabies, not the doctor)
I haven't tried the detergent on myself, but if I'm using Jeffer's Iodine Shampoo (for horses) I might as well try dishsoap too!
Hope all is well with you and yours,
QH

Does anyone here listen to Jerry Baker's "on the garden line" radio show? He has a spray he recommends for spider mites, for the yard, for everything....and he says one of these is a natural miticide, but cant remember which it is. Anyhow, he recommends one fourth cup Murphy's Oil Soap, 1/4 cup any kind lemon dish detergent, 1/4 cup baby shampoo, and 1/4 cup yellow Listerine type mouthwash(altho I have been using the blue/green one personally).... I have been spraying this mix on my furniture to about a quart of water, and I am personally adding in a touch of clove oil and citronella oil and its working great for spraying around the house, the bed, the pillows, etc. Its really working to keep them from biting me in the bed. I also added Murphys Oil Soap to my bath the other day, and it worked better than anything I had tried in a long time. Perhaps they needed something new to slam at them? Jill
