Probably not good for the environment, but I saw it on "Little House on the Prairie" when rats brought some scourge to town.
Today I found it in my parasitology book. Check it out:
It can bleach and weaken materials, like linens and cotton fabrics, and can discolor metals. Remove these items from the house before beginning. Remove all foodstuffs from the house. Be sure the house is vacated of all people, pets, plants, etc. Seal all exit crevices tightly. Use 2 - 4 lbs. of powdered sulphur per 1000 cubic feet. Place powdered sulphur in a large, shallow, iron pot. Place pot in a tub of water, which is elevated on a table or box. Make a crater in the sulphur, and soak with wood or grain alcohol, and ignite. Continue fumigation up to 6 hours. Air house thoroughly.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL, DON'T CATCH THE HOUSE ON FIRE if you choose to try this. It sure is something I'm going to think about because they are in areas of the house though not so much anymore, but could be re-infesting me daily.

What critters is the burning sulfur suppose to eradicate according to your source? Could you give the name, etc. of the book, too? Thanks.

It is the Textbook of Clinical Parasitology 1942, and it was under "bedbugs". The book is a treasure I found on E-bay.
On TV, (Little House on the Prairie) it was another "bug" carried by rats. The bugs carried a disease, I can't remember the name.
