Here in South Florida we don't have the same type fireflies as you have further North. But we do have some really awsome lightning bugs called "click beetles". These bugs have two huge glowing lights on their head and another bioluminescent organ in the tail. They don't blink on-and-off like fireflies do. Their light stays "on" and it actually intensifies when they get excited. It's always been fun to go outside just after dusk and watch these insects flutter around the shrubs in our backyard. Last year there were very few of them. This year we only saw one... and it was dead.

WOW Josey I think that it would be neat to see something like that. I love watching nature at it's best. It's sad that everything is declining . I have noticed a decline in the bees and yellow jackets and I alway find ladybugs in my pool . Which I try to save them and I don't see very many praying mantis which I think they are way to cool they way they can turn their heads . take care, massena

That's sure an interesting bug.
Same here with "what use to be". We use to hear birds in the morning with the window open, now we don't, there's a still eerie quietness anymore.

For the last couple of years my husband has noticed there are very few to no "northern type" lightning bugs. I have seen one praying mantis is the past several years and that was in Mexico.
But we do find TICKS and MOSQUITOES so unfortunately they are booming while our friendly insects disappear.

josej, i know what u mean, i have noticed a great decline in the lightning bugs too. it seems like all of the beneficial insects/animals are dying off (praying mantises, bees, bats, etc.) and all of the nasty ones are taking over (ticks, mosquitoes, parasites, ick!) even the birds look and act sick, in my area at least, they don't seem happy, they even fly crazy, like their navigation is off, and their feathers look mangy. other animals too, have u seen the reports of the bald bears? i watched a show on the discovery channel about the polar bears.....even they looked mangy, patches of fur falling out. mold, fungus, disease, parasites taking over? we are in deep trouble.
what have we done to our earth? god help us all.....
hugs, silverangel

Everything is quiet except for that doggone mocking bird who wakes me each morning with his megaphone voice!!!

I live in southwest Missouri and I am noticing hardly any lightning bugs, none this year so far, but I can't remember quite when they come out. Hardly any turtles around either.

Ya know I don't remember what month we start seeing the lightning bugs but there has been a steady decline in them, remember as a child having contest to see who could catch the most, now days just to see one is amazing.

Dearest Suebe do you think that the lightening bugs that you see could be glow worms? We have caves of them in the middle of the North Island and tourists come from all over the world to see the glow worms caves. I am soo glad that you are feeling much better. Love and hugs. Robbie

Robbie I don't think they are the same but don't know that for sure. The lightning bugs here in the north east fly and the hind end lights up a very pretty bright yellow.
We use to have such good times collecting them as kids. I remember when we moved from our farm to a house in the city. My brother and I in the car bawling our eyes out. We had forgotten to open a old chicken pen where we had our little turtle farm, we had 14 turtles that summers, Pop was so teed but turned the car around so we could go back and set them free.
I never see turtles anymore, frogs, sad and I ditto, what are we doing to our earth?
I've seen the green glow worm nightie night stuffed toy night light I got my children when they were little, so cute.
But I'd love to see a cave with glowing worms, how cool.
Love ya, hope your feeling better. Suebe

I recently put a fountain in my flowerbed and I was estatic about the arrival of honey bees that soon followed. I am now disappointed to find so 3 or 4 per day, dead in the water -the bees even seem to be sick.
