To answer a PM question, I was looking for the essential oils threads, especially the suggestions by Ant, but they didn't come up in the Search function.
So, to start off, I'll put this in - and hopefully the other information, or snippets of other threads that contain essential oil suggestions will be added. Especially the information on what works best for what, and where to buy these things economically. (Including out of USA)
I've found natural scents and oils helpful. These are the essential oils I'm using now.

Description
Flicks Horse and Pet Spray is a concentrated blend of lanolin and 6 natural essential oils. This blend conditions your animal’s coat and helps control fungus and other skin conditions. Each of the essential oils have properties that are offensive to most insects, especially flies, gnats, ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas.
Ingredients
Lanolin, Cedarwood Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Lemongrass Oil, Peppermint Oil, Cajeput Oil, Pennyroyal Oil. Contains no dyes.
Directions
Empty entire contents of small bottle into the spray bottle. Add 28 oz. of water. Makes one quart of mixture (7 to 1 concentrate). Shake well before using.
Brush the animal’s coat to remove any excess dust or dirt. Hold bottle approximately 12 inches away from the animal and apply to coat. Give special attention to shanks, shoulders, and legs. Do not spray near eyes or directly on animals face. For these areas, apply the liquid to a cloth and wipe on the animal’s face to avoid getting Flicks into the animal’s eyes.
WARNING
Keep out of reach of children.
Wash hands after use.
Avoid contact with eyes. In case of eye contact, flush thoroughly. If irritation occurs, contact a physician immediately.

Also, I bought seed packets of lavender and marigolds to plant around the house.
The skin is our largest organ, and it is important to help our body fight off what is in our body. Avoid harsh chemicals in all ways and even when using essential oils, be cautious.
For example, I read once that Tea Tree oil can cause headaches because it affects the brain if used too much. (no link to that) So, even with essential oils, you want to be careful.
