I recently received the following letter, signed by William Gahl, MD, PhD, Director of the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Program:
"Thank you for your interest in the Undiagnosed Diseases Program (UDP) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As its name indicates, the Undiagnosed Disease Program has as its primary purpose the investigation of disorders lacking a diagnosis, with the intent to discover new diseases. Morgellon's (sic) disease represents a known entity, making it less suitable for pursuit by the Program. This is especially true since there already exists a federally funded effort directed toward this disorder by the Center for Disease Control, with involvement of additional institutions (http://www.cdc.gov/unexplaineddermopathy/investigation.html)."

This would seem to explain why NIH began including Morgellons on their disease tree. Sort of retro-fitting a justification for not doing a serious, in depth study on one representative case of Morgellons. If anyone has followed this NIH program, you will know that it is very will funded. The amount of testing, including genetic testing, done for each patient is truly impressive. How much they could have learned! Incidently, "House" is based on Dr. Gahl and the kind of staff-intensive work that is done on patients at the NIH.
