Shepherds are the smartest dogs I have ever had the privilege of owning and training.. You don't have to tell them to do anything, there automatic thinkers,,, for the most part they read your thoughts and body language and act accordingly.. This is a true story "I swear to god it is"... My x-wife and I owned a jewelry store in town square, about 1/4 mile from where we lived and raised shepherds.. One night I was at the shop really late, catching up on some jewelry repair work, when I heard a tapping on the glass front doors,, it was one of our female shepherds "Sky" who got out of her kennel constantly, but we had no clue how she did it.. She was out and walking through the town square and spotted me in the shop, so I let her in and took her home with me.. That was how she knew the shop was ours, and she always showed up at the door anytime I was there late.. The fact that she found me was a cute coincidence but never gave it much thought other than that,, Shepherds are just naturally smart that way!! One afternoon (about a year after Sky started coming up to the shop late at night) a local police detective came into the store and told me he had gotten a tip that someone had planed to break into the shop sometime over the coming weekend so they were staking it out at night.. After the first night the cop came in and asked "HOW IN THE HE11 DID YOU TRAIN YOUR DOG TO DO THAT???" I asked "do what?" he said that Sky came up to the store, stood up and looked in all the windows, laid down in front of the main doors, got up every hour or so and patrolled all the way around the store, then laid back down in the doorway again,, she did this until just before dawn then came home and got back in her kennel,, ready and waiting for her breakfast!! I just laughed at him thinking he was either loosing it, or she just got out again and was looking for me up town at the shop again.. He said "no, I know work dog's when I see them,, the dog was on guard duty,, I swear she was!!" He told me, that night when he came to stake the store out he was going to bring his video camera to prove to me that she was guarding the store at night.. I checked just before I went to bed and Sky was sound asleep in her kennel,, the next morning when I went out to feed she was still in her kennel.. The cop came in just after we opened the shop and said "we caught the guys who were going to break in, but we had to chase them several blocks before we caught them because they were trying to get away from that dog!!" They pulled up beside the shop about 4:00 in the morning and Sky was waiting for them! She put them back in there care and was on there car hood ripping off there wiper blades and trying to get through the windshield at them like "she was rabid!!" as they tore out of there,, and she chased after them for a block or so,, then went back to the shop, stood up and checked all the windows, then laid back down in front of the doors!! I wouldn't have believed it, but he had the whole thing on video!!! The guys didn't get a chance to break into the shop,, but they had burglary tools in the car and finally confessed to a string of home break-in's in the area,, so the cop was happy even though Sky blew there shot at busting them after they broke into the store.. She did that every single night!! The cop's on duty would stop up at the store, bring her milk-bones and keep her company during night shift... She was our "small town celebrity dog" and loved everybody "except for burglars"!!! She was fully personal and property protection trained,, but chose to get out and guard the store every night "on her own" It worried me "at first" that she might go after an innocent person out walking in town at night, so I started keeping her in an 8 foot tall kennel, 2 feet taller than her old one was, thinking she was able to jump out of a 6 foot kennel.. I thought that took care of the problem but a few weeks later one of the local cops that I knew stopped in at the shop and let me know that Sky was up there every night still!! From about 11:00 at night until about 6:00 AM.. He said they stopped and played with her at night, and so did some of the locals who were cruising through town at night.. They would stop, roll down the window, call her over, pet on her and give her snacks! She never showed any aggression to anyone that they knew of,, she would wait until the people coming into work over at the courthouse started coming in, run over and greet them then head home,, everybody loved Sky to death!! Now you tell me,, how would a dog "that loved and got along with everybody" be such a big baby with the whole town,, but know to go after 2 guys getting out of a car who were planning on breaking into the shop?? German Shepherds are just that smart and they can read peoples minds!!!! Oh yea,, I waited and watched one night to see how she was getting out,, she actually climbed up and over the kennel fence, then again in the morning to get back in her kennel for breakfast..

Liatris thank you You're such a sweetheart! Friskers, that cartoon joke is too cute. (and TOO funny about something in the psychological department) (that you brought up so innocently). hahahahah I was just thinking about what you said. (the two men are somehow bringing or overseeing the presents) or have something to do with them- hahahahaha ;D ;D (( was that a subconscious thing in me or what?)) hahahaha I didn't even realize that till I read your post, hahaha That tickles me to pieces - cause I didn't even see that till now hahhaaa ;D ;D ;D I HAD to mention that cause it's something totally hilarious, that I'd done, and didn't even realize, hahahaha (that is stricking my ultra funny bone) Sid, I sat here and cried, (warm fuzzy tears) hehehe I did when I watched that beautiful video. How true and heart touching! That video was truly precious. Rhorn, What a fabulous story about Sky! Our "other than human loving friends are incredible". I could just see this entire event as I read your post. Just amazing. How incredible of Sky. And yes, they sure are thinkers, it's amazing how they KNOW something is the way it's suppose to be, or when something is wrong with a situation too. It's like they just love us no matter what, and do all they can in everyway to protect us. Oh, thank God for them And thank you for sharing this wonderful story.

Sid.....that was SUCH a cute video!!! Liatris........still waiting to see your" baby'! Rhorn and ANts.....thanks to our 2 men for participating !(especially since you 2 are over seeing and delivering our gifts!) ;D Frisky ---wouldn't of missed this thread for the world thank you frisky for being a part of lymebusters and mixing stuff up a bit in the up beat way that only you know how to do it really would not be that same around here with out you Rhorn loved your German Shepard story maybe if i get some time Ill tell a story when I was gold mining and a mountain lion came into camp early one morning after a night of old crow and merriment with me passed out by the fire with a unfinished chicken dinner by my head and My partner sleeping in the tent and how a German Shepard named junior and a malamute wolf named BB delt with the cat in different ways domestic breed smarts verses wild breed smarts in short in this instance in this wild setting BB clearly had the edge over junior but junior was no dummy I guess I've got this far in the story so I might as well pull a Paul Harvey on ya' and tell you the rest of the story When the mountain lion came into camp both dogs were in the tent with Jack and when they took off after the mountain lion they collapsed the tent on jack I woke up for a second and wondered what the commotion was and then went back to sleep but jack got his Luger and took out after the dogs a few minute's later I heard jack calling me so I got up and went through the bushes at the edge of the camp and looked up the hill where I heard Jacks voice come from what I saw was BB had the mountain lion in the tree and and was trying to get at the lion but junior was still running around looking for it and didn't know where it went --jack was standing directly under the mountain lion clearly with in jumping distance of the cat if it would of decided to pounce really stupid I thought at the time jack ask me if he should shoot it because he thought that it might give us trouble the rest of the time we were up there gold mining I looked into the cats eyes and I could tell that it did not want anything to do with us anymore and most assuredly didn't want any thing to do with the dogs the lion was just after that free chicken dinner that was by my head when I was sleeping I told jack much the same and we called the dogs off and went back to camp a short time later we went to look where the cougar was to see if it was still there and it was gone we were there gold mining in that canyon the rest of the summer and never saw the lion again so I thought it was a good call to let it go As far as smarts between the two breeds wild and domestic? BB had much better instincts and a better tracker in the wild but junior had city smarts much more obedant and loyal those two dogs saved our buts more than once

Dogs... and God. Pretty much tells the rest of both of your stories Ant and Rhorn doesn't it? Yeah... they're our protectors and our true loves I think! My ex husband showed up one night at the friends house I was staying at just after I left him. My friends were out that night and he came in and sat on top of me while I was laying on the couch watching tv with my dogs. He used to beat me and started doing the same thing again while I laid there. I remember him saying "so where are your friends now? Who do you think is gonna protect you now?" At that very second, my Bandit boy ran over and lunged at him while at the same time my friends happened to walk thru the door. My ex hit Bandit but he wouldn't back away. He held him there while my friends ran over and pulled him off of me. My sweet dog Bandit saved me from being beaten even more tho that night... even tho he knew Larry, he also knew he was going to try and hurt me and he wasn't gonna allow it to happen again, not on his watch! Dogs are truly special... and definitely one of God's greatest creations!
I loved your stories you guys... and I love this thread! It brings my babies back to me as tho they were all sitting here right by my side once again. I sure miss them, but there's no doubt in my mind they're waiting for me in Heaven. Heaven wouldn't be Heaven without animals!
I loved seeing Snip and our little Calamity Jane reaching the north pole too toni... you're doing such great things here and capturing their spirits so very well! Thank you my friend... for giving us such an uplifting thread this Christmas!
big hugs ~~ bannanny

"Frisky ---wouldn't of missed this thread for the world thank you frisky for being a part of lymebusters and mixing stuff up a bit in the up beat way that only you know how to do it really would not be that same around here with out you" Quote What a nice thing to say Ant! I feel exactly the same about you. Everyone here is so special and unique in the ways they contribute to the board here . It always pains me to see ANYONE leave for whatever reason. Rhorn............. Great story! i have a special dog friend I get to see every couple of weeks who is a german shepherd . My friend let me take him to the mountains for a few days and we had such a good time. He is such an etreemly well behaved dog . I had his dogbed he slept on and I slept in the cabins bed. One weird thing he would do was check on me about once an hour while I was sleeping .....I would wake up and find him staring at me ,as soon as I awakened and opened my eyes he would go lay back down. It was like he was making sure I wasnt dead or something! ;D

Oh, Toni !! This IS a Blast from the Past !!! Another example of Toni's artistic expertise --- this time, a photograph (with realtime snow added!) she took of me and Nuutchki when we three were on vacation in the Swiss alps several years ago. (note our cute matching magenta Christmas apparel - note HIS mittens) Hey, Toni --- remember the day you took that picture was the day that you and Nuutch and I went tobogganing down those slopes and caused a five-toboggan pile up?! I'm sure Nuutchki would disagree, but it was his fault by distracting you from your normally expert maneuvering with all his screaming in your ear, backseat-driving comments/commands ! Next time, he sits in the very back ! Well, as it turned out, nobody was hurt but as the snow settled, we saw Nuutchki looking around in the snow in a panic --- he declared that he had lost a whisker in the "accident" ! I inspected his little puss and it really was impossible to tell if a whisker was missing - I mean nothing looked uneven or missing. Nevertheless, he insisted that it had been detached so Toni and I and a few other people looked around in the pristine, white snow for a WHITE whisker ! After a fruitless hour had passed by, Toni and I headed back to the chalet for dinner. When dusk approached we wondered how long Nuutch was going to stay out there --- the slope was not far from our chalet so we weren't worried about him --- just thought it was silly for him to continue his search in the dark - especially since it had started to snow again (sheesh). He finally returned --- it was obvious by the irritable look on his face that he had not succeeded in finding his missing appendage. Toni gently asked him what he had intended to do with the whisker, had he found it. Nuutchki muttered something about how it was obvious that neither Toni or I had bothered to do ANY research related to our trip to Switzerland. We apparently missed the travel guide's mention of how advanced the Swedish surgeons were --- Nuutchki claimed that the surgeons there, would no doubt, be completely capable of surgically re-attaching the whisker with the utmost cosmetically surgical finesse ! By the next day, amazingly (and to our relief), Nutchhki realized that he was still attracting admiring looks from all the cute Swedish kitten-chicks (smitten kittens ) at the resort and apparently had decided that he remained stunningly handsome. He had calmed down and we all enjoyed the rest of the holiday. Yes, even though Nuutch could be a nudge at times, we loved him and always tried to bring the best out in him ! Thank you so much, Toni ! Though, I know that you love being creative, I also know how much time, effort and love you put into bringing us this joyful thread ! You have been so busy with so much of this thread's artwork and busy with holiday preparations of your own, I really appreciate your taking the time to dig up this old photo, add the realtime snow and post it here for more fun ! Many hugs and much love and appreciation ! Liatris

hahahaha Liatris ;D I had a BLAST reading the story about our trip to the Alps! ;D And our 5 man pile up of toboggan's. And Nuutchki's whisker, hahahhaha TOO funny! Yep, I think what distracted me was trying to wrap his warm furry body around my neck to keep warm hehehe What fun pretending ;D ;D ;D (now I wanna go for real) ;D PS, thank you Liatris I had much fun and joy reading your story, it was as adorable as you and your kitty there!
