Yesterday my brother Jeff had a bad accident. He was riding his bicycle where he goes to work out. He went up the ramp for the disabled which was slick from the morning dew. I'm not exactly sure what caused him to skid, but he did, and he, and the bike fell to the ground. Funny, they have a sign up already that cautions you going up the "bike ramp."
Not a great distance to fall, although the damage was great. I didn't realize how hard it would be to explain what exactly the consequences of this accident had on my brother, so it should be interesting having me explain it to you. Maybe I should just tell you what they told my brother, but it wasn't true. They said he crushed his pelvis. This wasn't true. If you've forgot your anatomy, here's a little review to possibly understand what the problem is, as I understand it, although you can skip it, and go to the next paragraph, if ya want to.
The "femur" is the thigh bone, the longest bone in the body. The lower end joins the tibia (shin) to form the knee joint. The upper end is rounded into a ball (or "head" of the femur) that fits into a socket in the pelvis to form the hip joint. Just below the head is a constriction, or neck, and two large processes - an upper, lateral "greater trochanter" and a lower, medial "lesser trochanter." These processes provide attachments for muscles of the legs and buttocks. The neck of the femur gives the hip joint a wide range of movement, but it is a point of weakness and a common site of fracture.
OK. So all we're talking about is that the ball that fits into a socket in the pelvis is crushed. Tomorrow morning which is now today, (I'm a little late in writing, as usual) from approximately 7AM to 11AM, give, or take an hour, 3 surgeons will be possibly just taking out a lot of splinters, gluing bone back together, maybe doing a hip replacement, & some other things I don't know about.
The point to this is that I would appreciate your prayers for my brother to come through this with flying colors, which I'm sure he will, although I don't really know. I have no idea what could happen, I just am hoping for the best. He's been in incredible pain with a 10 minute morphine push pump. He's going to be laid up for 3 months, & then I don't know what happens then. It all depends on whether everything goes OK.. The thing I'm scared about most is the possibility of nerve damage which would be the worst case scenario.
Even if you read this after the fact, your prayers will be appreciated greatly, & could still help. God told me so. That's why I'm writing the best I can late into the night hoping you have that Christmas spirit to pray hard. Although he has his brotherly flaws, Jeff's the best brother I have, so please help me help him. If you missed the operation, there's always the aftermath, which may be even more pain, and miserable, which is unimaginable.
Please pray for my brother. He's a good man. He recycles. I love you guys,, freaky
