More from article link below. Using sophisticated tools of molecular or biochemical analysis and the out-of-the-box thinking of a team of specialists with time and freedom to pursue any avenue have paid off. There have been dozens of medical triumphs, deducing answers to problems that have eluded others. In addition to Benge’s diagnosis, the team diagnosed a woman with life-threatening protein deposits in her muscles and a 20-year-old with a previously unknown muscle and lung disorder. Such discoveries inspire deep gratitude, even when no treatment is available, Gahl said. “They just want some knowledge of what it is, even if it’s terrible,” he noted. Some patients are still waiting for help, including a young woman with a disorder that prevents her from opening her mouth more than a quarter-inch, and a 50-year-old woman who has unexplained spikes of keratin protruding from hair follicles on her scalp.End of quotes from article. *Intestingly, I too have seen the spikes of keratin protruding from a hair follicle on my scalp.* today.msnbc.msn.com/id/45327870/ns/today-today_health/t/mystery-disease-diagnosed-clinic-last-resort/

Good afternoon ladies. Toni, this keratin you speak of,is there any chance it appears to be rolled up when observed under the scope? I have one follicle that constantly produces something like this. After removing this spike, it grows back , almost immediately. Immagine that. Have a happy, peaceful afternoon everyone. Morghunter.

What you've described, sounds exactly what I've seen too. With water put on the specimen, and a fine tipped needle it can be rolled out to make it flat. Some sure are that way. And yes, they grow right back in the same exact places even when they're plucked out.
