I've been looking at my hair a lot under the microscope recently. The ribbon-like fibers are growing from the shaft. Also, there are multiple growths that resemble tumors. These tumory growths often engulf the hair root as well.
But, the interesting thing is, there seems to be a correlation between bad and good health: The most fibers and tumors appear about an inch from the base of the hair---- the hair that would have been produced during the time when I was most sick. The length of the hair, before getting sick, is fine. The newest hair growth shows less fiber-tumors, and recently [until last week] my health is better.
For ladies, leg hair is especially a great measurement. We can judge within a week or two the progress. Last week my health suddenly got bad- so I examined the leg hair- and yes, 2 weeks growth (shhh it's winter) shows entirely clean length, then fibers near the base.
So our hair is like iceburgs or tree rings... documenting our Morgellons? Japanese researchers found a way to test if we have cancer in our body by examining hair.... Interesting.
Has anyone else noticed this? I may be wrong in my assumptions.

This was about to slip to page two, so I just want to add a brief answer. Maybe someone else can do better.
Those clusters of ribbon-like (at 800x) tannish things that come from the scalp and circle the hair follicle will emerge on all the hairs in one area at the same time. So, they will all be 1/8" above the scalp line, or 1/4" above the scalp line, etc.
For me (knock on wood) so far I've only had scalp issues. And, it's various areas of the scalp, but I hadn't noticed that all the areas have the same timing on the emergence of stuff.
It's something I'll watch for.
The gel hairs, I believe, are always there.
