Kado's got tonsillitis . He's finally drinking juice today, I'm going to try Lugol's Iodine before taking him in. He won't take NO oral meds, he'll vomit but I can manage to get him to drink a couple drops in his juice cup AND Dr. Clark says thats okay and I love and trust her right!?! I just talked to the advice nurse @ the kids pediatrician office to consider my options: Okay my Lymies...help me...could this hurt? We've not been diagnosed with Lyme but we know there is a huge Lyme/Autism connection. We have Lyme symptoms but ya'll know me right!?! My concerns... They can do a one time injectable with one of the above subject titles. Could that or would that affect the Lyme if its only a one time dose? I know ya'll that know about Lyme have to be on meds for like e.v.e.r...I don't want to do more damage. I hate to sound so ignorant but I am really anti-bacterial med and bacteria illiterate. Thanks ya'll.

C, My wife (KJ) and I are both taking daily shots of Rocephin. 1 gram diluted in 3.6 ml of 2% lidocaine HCL sterile water. (If you don't put the lidocaine, it hurts) Plus a whole gram of that stuff is a pretty big shot... something about the size of a grape... and it goes intramuscularly in the butt. But, we're both adults. For pediatrics, I've read that it's used as a one-time cure for things like ear infections, especially when the kids can't tolerate taking it by mouth. So, we're on this, once-a-day for 6 weeks.

Do you know much about it? Yeah they'll be treating the source of the tonsil infection but what will one dose do for the rest of the bacterial infection that may already be present in the body? Any idea?
Six weeks, daily injections...diagnosed with Lyme? They wife? Who is treating you? Thanks!

Carrie, I imagine you're concerned about a herx-like reaction from possible borrelia infection, right? As Jose stated, the Rocephin IM is a large shot, though treatment for kids may be totally different. But if they haven't cultured it to find if the cause is viral or bacterial, I'd go ahead and use the Bicillin to be safe. Hopefully he won't have too much of a reaction but if he does, it could be very telling where Lyme is concerned. Give him some extra TLC and hugs from us!

Thanks Patti...
They haven't cultured yet. I absolutely HATE taking my kids in. I haven't forever. Under these circumstances I will though, since he's very sick and I can't do it myself.
So you think the Bicillin is better than Rocephin for possible Strep? Do you think either will irritate Lyme if its there? Can Lyme cause tonsillitis?

bicillin-LA (long-acting) is probably one of the best medicines you can take for lyme, if you can afford it and can get someone to "do it" for you (it's an IM). however, you prolly need at least 2 months of it(2-3 times/wk) to even make it worthwhile....
for using it one time, or briefly... well... consider that rocephin does basically break up the cell wall i guess some have theorized it can turn certain bacteria into their "cell wall deficient" forms.
i'm not sure if bicillin has the same issue.
lyme could possibly cause tonsilitis. it'll pretty much cause any "itis" actually, in fact, lyme should just be called "the itis."
since the tests they run for lyme are lame, and will give you a false negative, consider asking them for a CD57 (natural-killer-1) test... if the level is below 60 (normal is 60-360) then it's probably a good indication of chronic lyme infection... and a good idea to get the igenex test ($$$'s) and treat for lyme if that is positive by the laxer ILADS standards (not the CDC's). The CD57 is sort of a "lyme bellwether" -- it can help you not waste money on expensive tests that may well turn out negative anyways (even if the patient has lyme anyways)... and since it's a known immune marker, you can at least have something to point to as "wrong" and request that your doctors figure out what exactly is wrong with the immune system.

Great info Niels but I don't think she's considering a Lyme test for her son at this time......first things first in treating the tonsillitis, and her concern was that he might herx from any IM they give him. I really don't have a clue about this but since the shot would stay with him awhile, he might have a few symptoms show up but I wouldn't think they'd be that bad. I have never heard outright that Lyme causes tonsillitis but considering the connection to Strep, I guess it's possible. I do know of a fellow Lymie who says she had severe problems with her tonsils for years as a child, prior to her Lyme diagnosis. But given that this happens with many children, I doubt the probability is too high and hopefully he will improve within that first 48-hour period. The main thing is to get treatment started since it can sometimes develop into rheumatic fever....this happened to my brother when he was a kid and you sure don't want that. I guess just try and trust that the doctor will know what is best (as long as they don't give him tetracyclines or sulfonamides). Keep us posted on this Carrie and we'll send out prayers that he recovers quickly with no complications at all.

Neils thank you for the info. Are you doin' these things? Patti you too...I was hoping you'd come back to help me. I'm stuck. I don't know what to do. I'm scared to death to take him in, I'm scared of my mouth and where that may lead me. He's really not improving even though he is drinking. I hate to give him antibiotics as I attribute his autism in part to being kicked of by them when he was just eight months old. However, I do know that there are times when the are absolutely necessary. I DON'T, I CAN'T trust them...I agree ...isn't there an answer book out there some where? I'm sittin' here with him. The advice nurse suggested I check back in with her tomorrow. I don't want to take him in but I'd die if I waited and it made him worse. Help...ya'll damn...any other thoughts? What the hell do I do here?

Carrie, if it's strep. He will have to see a doctor. Strep can be real bad with kids. Even worse if he has this illness. So keep an eye on him. If he gets bad, take him ,to the ER. Watch his temp. also. Hope he gets better soon.

if they're willing to inject an antibiotic, then that eliminates the antibiotics main side effect, which is nausea and stomach upset until one adjusts... it also removes variables of absorption and interference from other foods/medicines.
so if you can get them to give bicillin LA (not the other kind... make sure it's "LA" which is better since kids won't need to get a painful shot so often) i'd consider it.
and it's much nicer to a kid than either running an IV every day, or setting up a more permantent IV and a hospital bed....
anyways, from what i've seen, bicillin LA looks like "it's da shizzle!" bicillin LA is supposedly just as effective or better than rocephin, without the complications of IV -- since it's basically "a shot" (intramuscular). at least for disease like lyme. And for syphillis -- where it's **the**approved medicine for the condition.
i've always had crappy insurance or out-of-pocket, so I was never able to get IM or IV abx, though in hindsight they would have been warranted. i do have a script for IM bicillin LA from my LLMD, but it's over $450.00/mo in the form where it's premeasured into it's own disposable syringe.
i have a feeling my lyme is finally kicked to the curb, so eventually when i stop my antibiotics, i'll have that scrip handy incase i relapse.

Bugsy...Carrie+Son...cute. I used to call him KadoSon all the time, you know like Kado Sun...? You know like a martial art master or something.
No I am not okay with this...this is very difficult. I'm sittin' here spinning my wheels. Thanks Lymernick...I didn't sleep well last night...one eye open.
Neils...Bicillin is better but what about a one time dose for his issue? That's all he'd get. Do you think that'd be okay for him. I'm very concerned about giving him ANYTHING you know!?!
DC what it 10/8/01 or is that not accurate?
