My 21-yr-old son recently diagnosed with schizophrenia but just want to be sure its not Morgellons. Two of my brothers & 1 sister have it. Definitely a genetic factor. Thanks!

Hello kranny2, So sorry your son is having problems. You are concerned that he receive a proper and correct diagnosis and you are right to pursue this avenue. Even under state programs you should be able to request for additional (second opinion) evaluation, if that is who is currently treating him. The case worker should be able to direct you to get such a request. Persons afflicted with morgellons often test positive for Lyme disease, one statistic says 95% of the time. Lyme is able to mimic many other diseases and is called all of these names as a result: "Great Imposter, Great Imitator, Great duh, some other one I can't recall right now". Lyme disease can enter the Central Nervous System (CNS) and wreak all sorts of havoc. There is a test done on the spinal fluid, which gives an even stronger indication that the bacteria has made it's way into the CNS. More complicated than the blood work and more expensive. Just having it show up in the blood should be enough to arouse some suspicion. You need a doctor who is willing to work with you to get the testing done. Please stay in touch with the members here so you can get the information to get this accomplished. You might take a look now at the website that is the Neuropsychiatic Assessment for Lyme Disease and note if there are some symptoms that relate to your son's illness. www.mentalhealthandillness.com/lymeframes.htmlDon't undermine the doctor's official diagnosis to your son. He may get those ideas on his own, though, no matter what you do. Compliance is a huge issue with the mentally ill population because they just don't like the way the medications make them feel! Sometimes they forget, sometimes they just want to believe they don't need the medication. I'm so sorry for you and your son's situation and hope you will find the help you need. It is possible that he would have both Lyme disease and schizophrenia. Stand strong like you are. spec

Thanks to you both for your support! I'm a new member but have been reading this site and others, including blogs, since the beginning. I don't know if I would ever have lived to figure out how to beat this thing if it weren't for the info and kind words of encouragement I've found on the net. I became a member because I feel enough better to maybe help with some posts instead of just hanging on to others' words. At least that's the plan. God bless all of you!

Hi Kranny, and thank you so much for joining our group. As we always say, there is power in numbers and I hope that we can be of some help to you.
I'm truly sorry about the situation with your son and from what I've seen with this disease, I wouldn't doubt anything. But you will get the best support available from here (okay, I'm prejudiced, lol) and I'm sure we can learn a lot from you too.
Stay strong and keep the faith....there will be help for us all eventually.
Hugs! Patti
