Is there anyway to tell if canned food is NOT genetically Modified?
Just wondering like for green beans and other vegetables and tomatoes, tomatoe sauce, spagettii sauce.
Anything with soy in America is 80% GM.
Canola, cottonseed, and corn oil is most likely all GM as well. I read labels and try never to buy this if it is listed on whatever food product you are buying.
Margarine is TERRIBLE!
BESSIE,
That is good to know about fresh produce..............thanks for the info! I wonder if we can find it for other foods too!
I heard with rice, they contaminated all the rice so the FDA went ahead and called the BAD RICE safe and it is what we have right now because there was no way to undue the damage to the rice?
I will have to look for where I read that. I was not happy that the FDA did that.

I'm growing my own tomatoes and basil, I wonder does it matter from where the seeds came from.?? I bought the plants at lowes hardware stores. ? I just know there is nothing like eating a home grown tomato, they have soooo much more flavor than those store bought ones!! Has anyone every noticed on the potatoes and some of the fruit that you buy has these weird dots on them that look like Morgs. nano I have taken photos if anyone would like to see, I just have to figure out out to post them into the tread. massena

If you can find on the internet the movie called:
The Future of Food, you can see that most of the seeds are already (genetically engineered), then sold. They do this so that when the plants grow, no matter where they're grown, they've got a built in pesticide in every cell of that plant.
Also the DVD can be rented, it's very informative about all our food we eat, and what is fed to animals (chickens, cows, etc) and then we eat that too. It's almost impossible to get away from it.

I have seen parts of Future of Food and would like to see all of it soon. The other day, yahoo videos had this one featured: 60minutes.yahoo.com/segment/177/doomsday_vaultWednesday, June 4, 2008 Doomsday VaultLife's LibraryIt's located some 700 miles from the North Pole, buried hundreds of feet deep in rock and ice, safe and secure from intruders, natural disasters and even military attack! What's inside? Hundreds of millions of seeds from more than 100 countries, all assembled and kept safe to protect the world's fragile food supply. Bundle up, as Scott Pelley heads into the frozen north for a tour. Fort Knox on IceDID YOU KNOW? Svalbard, Norway, the site of the vault, is actually part of a collection of ice-covered islands. They're due north of Europe, and among the last bits of land before the North Pole. The vault cost $9 million to build and there are 1,500,000,000 seeds from nearly every nation locked inside. It was built to last 10,000 years. Norway paid for construction of the vault, while Microsoft founder Bill Gates paid to ship the seeds. Each country owns and has access to the seeds they have deposited. Its official name is "The Svalbard Global Seed Vault" and it has a maximum capacity of 2,250,000,000 seeds. The seeds are stored at a temperature of zero degrees Fahrenheit.

Forgot to mention, Earth once had 7000 varieties of APPLES.
Now 85% are gone.
The vault is to keep the genes in the seed so we don't keep losing our plant life.
EVERY form of life on Earth is at RISK!
Very sad.

Doesn't the size make a difference? For some reason I have always shied away from buying produce that appears too big to be natural. I think it was a big deal when they first spoke of GM produce, I remember seeing huge watermelons and such.
My produce does not label the 8's. And these onions looked huge!

Kmarie - Any idea if any of these seeds are GMO? I read an article awhile ago that Monsanto fronted most of the $$ to build it. I'll try to find the link... Bessie

Cyn, it used to be size, but now, the watermellons are made small for singles and old people etc. The seedless watermelon is a sure bet to be GM. It is hard to say where we can buy real seeds vs GM seeds. And even if they say whole food, organic, it may still be GM. I am still searching for a store that has no or little GM food and has labels stating what is really in the product. My old boyfriend called me the other day and left me a message stating that all grocery store manager have to tell you, if you ask, which items are GM. I don't think I will try asking though, the poor manager would be there all day with me. Ha. ChicagoBonnie

I questioned the manager at my local healthfood store about a honeydew that was a cantalope inside - organic, too. He did not have a clue how to tell.
