I was reading Ever Hopeful's brilliant DOP website when I came across the Sandal Thing image. She said a chemist had suggested it looked like a lamprey eel larvae. So out of curiosity I searched google for "lamprey eel larvae images." I was glancing down the search results page and found two items of interest. The first item was the brain nuerons at the top of the page. The second was the fifth item listed, SONW Main Text:ambient UV-B is killing MIDGE LARVAE- a major food source for......does nothing for the sturgeon, LAMPREY, and other creatures. Didn't someone here post something about midge fly being a possible critter we're dealing with? Am I reaching that they were mentioned in the same sentence? Just checking justice

The midge fly can carry human filaria disease.
I am extremely suspicious of this one, because of the SIMILARITIES. But my Lyme doctor says NO because filaria doesn't branch and because of some white blood cell count or something.
However, the similarites are:
vector-borne disease intense itching nodules, especially around the head and neck thread-like worms (dr said they haven't found any worms, but what is it that we are all finding?)
