Hi everyone,
We just got home from a weeks holiday to find this brown stuff with horns growing on our bathroom floor. I contacted my scientist friend right away to see if she could identify what this is. Her first thought was a splash pattern & a chemical reaction of iron & carbonate. I'm thinking this isn't a splash pattern as nothing is dripping from above. There is another small area of brown stuff growing also, so it's just not confined to this one area.
Upon thinking, I do remember cleaning this brown stuff off the floor a couple of times before over the last couple of months. I thought my partner or son had dripped something on the floor, but thinking now it was the same thing.

The first image is the brown stuff inside a plastic zip lock bag. Do they look like hairs to you? When I scrapped the stuff off the floor it opened up like a powder & hairs stood up on end, it was freaky.
I'm going to see if I can get this sent to a lab for analysis at NO COST hopefully. I will have to go through a government lab like the Agricultural Department.
What I can tell you about the floor to help you to help me figure this out is that last year we had a sewer problem & the bathroom was flooded with sewage, it came up through the plug holes. I was knee deep in it filling buckets & running outside to empty them. I did get sick afterwards & developed a UTI. Every since I've been concerned about what could be growing under the floor as the floor covering has started to lift.
We don't own the house we are renting, unfortunately trying to get our landlord to attend to any sort of maintenance is near impossible. However, if we are able to have the brown stuff analysed & it shows that this could be a dangerous fungus or mould we could stand a much better chance.
Hope you can help.
Thanks - itchin
